Oak Class Home Learning 14.05.2020

Good Morning Oak Class!

I hope you all had a lovely day yesterday. I was in school yesterday, so it was lovely to see some familiar faces. The day went by incredibly quickly and before I knew it, I was sat back at home in my pyjamas and watching TV.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

For today’s writing task, I would like you to focus on a specific extract from chapter three. It is the moment when Harry first receives his letter from Hogwarts (but he doesn’t know it’s from them at this point). Take a moment to read the extract and consider how Harry might have been feeling at this point in the story. Does the letter look like a normal letter one might receive through the post?

Today, I would like you to write a letter to Harry. Write your letter from the point of view of a friend. As it has been the summer holidays, you haven’t seen him in a while and you are wanting to catch up before you both start high school in September. For the Y6 children amongst us, there will be many thoughts and feelings that you can relate to with Harry, as you too will be starting a new school in the coming months.

As with any letter, the layout is important. It should be written in an informal style (think about the audience) and remember to include questions directed at Harry.

Harry picked it up and stared at it, his heart twanging like a giant elastic band. No one, ever, in his whole life, had written to him. Who would? He had no friends, no other relatives — he didn’t belong to the library, so he’d never even got rude notes asking for books back. Yet here it was, a letter, addressed so plainly there could be no mistake:

Mr. H. Potter

The Cupboard under the Stairs

4 Privet Drive
Little Whinging
Surrey

The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment, and the address was written in emerald-green ink. There was no stamp.

Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H.
